There’s been a terrific new wave of research and interest in the medical community recently of the potentially enormous health benefits of psychoactive substances.  A growing international call by prestigious research organizations and scientific publications for more investigation has helped to bring a much needed spotlight to this woefully underdeveloped field in order to unlock the massive scientific breakthroughs that psychoactive compounds hold.  Experts now believe that potential treatments and cures for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, schizophrenia, addiction, and many more disorders lie within this type of research.  One researcher leading the pack is Dr. Stephen Ross, director of the NYU Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship, whose team is embarking on a fascinating new study exploring how the hallucinogenic compound, psilocybin, might help those with alcoholism.  You can watch his recent interview with CBS News above.  For more insight into the nature of addiction and the human brain be sure to watch the Charlie Rose special below.  And Terrence McKenna has a few words of wisdom to share about the matter as well.
