Meet Dr. Evan Antin: The World's Sexiest Veterinarian

Through the years I’ve been slowly building my list of the World’s Sexiest Career Hunks. From the World’s Sexiest Chef, to the World’s Sexiest Ph.D. Professor, to the World’s Sexiest Doctor, to the World’s Sexiest Hollywood Executive, to the World’s Sexiest Gynecologist — it’s a list that never stops growing. Now my latest update comes from a profession that doesn’t typically come to mind when we think of sex appeal — veterinary medicine.

His name is Dr. Evan Antin (31), and he is animal expert and exotic animal veterinarian at Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital in Thousand Oaks, California, roughly a 20-minute drive northwest of his home in the shee-shee-foo-foo Los Angeles suburb of Calabasas (which is also home to a very famous family that the world seems to love Keeping Up With). Evan’s bio reads as follows: “Dr. Evan Antin hails from Kansas City, Kansas where he grew up spending the majority of his childhood in search of native wildlife including snakes, turtles and insects. He went on to study evolutionary and ecological biology at the University of Colorado at Boulder and spent multiple semesters abroad in Australia and Tanzania to learn more about their respective ecosystems and fauna.”

“In addition to his love for cats and dogs, Dr. Antin’s passions lie in exotic animal medicine and interacting with exotic animals in their native habitats around the world. For more than a decade Dr. Antin has made an effort to seek opportunities to work with wildlife on a domestic and international level to include locations such as Central America, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Eastern and Southern Africa, South East Asia and a variety of North American ecosystems. #endoscopy is an amazing diagnostic tool and treatment option for veterinarians. Not all vet hospitals are fortunate enough to be equipped with one and I’m very thankful to say we’re pretty hi-tech here @conejovet . So this perty lil iguana was brought in almost immediately after swallowing a toothpick. As you can imagine toothpicks are not very digestible and their sharp & rigid properties make them dangerous inside the gastrointestinal tract and could potentially perforate these soft tissues which could be fatal in just hours to days. This pathologic process is referred to as septic coelomitis (=infection of the internal body cavity; not good) Luckily I was able to locate the toothpick and used a biopsy tissue grasping instrument to retrieve it from the small intestine and pull it right back out of her mouth; you can see the toothpick in the first image in the tissue forceps. The second image is our silly iguana high on life, Alfaxan (15 mg/kg IV) and isoflurane (Maintenance gas anesthesia + a ventilator). She came-to shortly thereafter and did great following her procedure. They call me the Mexican Beaded Lizard matchmaker ? Jk, these lil monsters have been living together and breeding for a long time and very comfortable around one another. That being said, I generally recommend precaution before co-habitating reptiles together, even the same species. Cage aggression can lead to high stress and fatal injuries. For many reptiles it’s not an issue but recommended for experienced reptile hobbyists. #babies It doesn’t really matter what animal species…to me, any baby is cute ??Even the slithering, venomous ones ?The Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes just had their babies a few weeks ago so be on the lookout if you live in Southern California. #didyouknow rattlesnakes give live birth? They’re ovoviviparous which basically means they produce eggs but the babies “hatch” internally before leaving mom. Most other reptiles lay eggs and the babies break out of a shell like baby birds. #potbelly pigs always make my day a little more exciting, lol. Miss piggy here was very sweet but quite sensitive too and if I moved her around too much or restrained her she’d scream and stress out. So I made a special exception and induced anesthesia right here on my lap. Did I mention that I caught a gorgeous Southern Pacific Rattlesnake yesterday too!? I’m obsessed with snakes btw, especially hots! (“Hots” = venomous snakes in world of reptile nerds like myself). #tbt #brazil 2011! I struck romance with this gorgeous Yacare Caiman (closely related to alligators) in one of my #favorite ecosystems/regions on the planet- The Pantanal ??? This large wetlands area of central Brazil is basically like the Everglades on crack! I was there during their #dryseason so all the wildlife was super concentrated and easy to find, it was soo epic!!! And as much as I’d like to think this caiman had the same feelings for me I’d be lying to myself. What you’re seeing is called “Tonic Immobilization” and in crocodilians (= all crocodiles, alligators, gharials and caimans) this is when the animal is gently placed upside-down they go into a trance-like state and often don’t right themselves until you assist them in doing so. #intimateandalittleawkward A big part of #veterinary medicine is really getting to know your #patients personally. It’s very easy to take this aspect of veterinary practice for granted especially when you’re slammed with appointments on top of hospitalized inpatients and procedures and diagnostics/interpretations, etc but it really does make you a better doctor to try to connect with your animal patients. Some animals are more receptive than others and of course this isn’t much of an option with true #wildlife patients (ie a super stressed out and aggressive bobcat). This #malamute is the SWEETEST guy and always down to lay around and #cuddle, even on the exam floor hahaha. I also want to mention that this pic was taken by Laura Dang with #NextShark and she wrote up a super fun article on me with amazing pictures all from 1 day on the job (she shadowed me during an entire shift). Tortoises make great pets and great props…JK!!! This is one very cooperative tortoise tho. Sulcatta tortoises often hide in their shells and LITERALLY NOTHING can get them out.
