Nestled in an area of villas in South Hakone of Shizuoka, Japan, the “Crescent House“, designed by Japanese superstar designers SHIGERU BAN Architects, gets its name from the elegant “C”-shaped bow plan. Raised on pilottis, the first floor living spaces are entered via a ground floor staircase enclosed in glass, which makes its way up through the underside of the home. The deep curved cross-section of the home is lined with sliding glass doors along the elevation which looks out towards the Japanese landscape and Mount Fuji off in the distance. The cleverly curved plan also blocks views of the neighbours’ much less appealing homes. Two bedrooms bookend each side of the Crescent House, with dining, living, and kitchen areas making up the main central space.
