XTEN Architecture are the design wizards behind this gorgeous home situated in the affluent and exclusive neighborhood of the Hollywood Hills in the southeastern Santa Monica Mountains. With breathtaking views of Los Angeles, the Nakahouse as it’s called, was actually an existing home “built as a series of interconnected terraced spaces on the down slope property.” Due to zoning regulations and limitations of the geography around the site, the architects at XTEN were required to build off of the existing footprint of the original home. They added a terrace off the kitchen for outdoor dining and partying, and a steel staircase was added leading up to the rooftop Jacuzzi. Two more terraces were added on to the bedroom suites, which each have huge glass walls that maximize the views and the natural light intake. The interiors were almost completely changed in order to bring a fresh, modern energy to the home. The bright white interiors were achieved with a combination of lacquered cabinets, matte white quartz, epoxy resin floors and decks, while the dark walls are made of smooth black plaster.
Harold Coffin once wrote “Envy is the art of counting the other fellow’s blessings instead of your own” and I’m trying desperately to keep this in mind as I look at these photos, but I will admit it’s awfully difficult.
