Tokyo is one of the most tightly-packed cities in the world, and the architecture of the city reflects these constraints in every possible way. Not a single square inch of surface or space is lacking in form or function when it comes to the most thoughtful architectural designs, and the Y House in the Saitama prefecture of Tokyo is no exception. The clients’ mandate to the architects was to maximize privacy without sacrificing a strong connection to the outdoors, maintain solar access in all the rooms of the house, and to use the outdoor space to enhance the feeling of openness and volume in the otherwise small building.
