Sometimes I see a series of images of a design and instead of focusing on the spatiality of the project I get overwhelmed with the tactility of it all. The photos below are from Twister, a new restaurant in Kiev, Ukraine by the design team Sergey Makhno and Vasily Butenko also of Kiev. You wouldn’t doubt it for a second when you see these images that the biggest chunk of their firm’s contracts are furniture-related, because the spaces, objects, and materiality of Twister clearly come from a team that knows a thing or two about textiles and the sensuous art of touch. When I saw these images for the first time the only thing I wanted to do was run around and bite, scratch, and rub myself all over the walls and foamy materials. The concept was to capture the upward pull of a tornado (i.e. furnishings that appear to “hover” on their spindley legs, rain drop light fixtures, and huge sculptural columns that give the impression of crows next balconies). The bar area is the “bird’s nest” zone with thatch stick-covered walls. You can learn more about the design team at Sergey Makhno and Vasily Butenk.
