Producer, Philosopher, & Hottest Man In The Universe John Maus, Releases Beautiful “Mental Breakdown”

John Maus is in the upper echelon of all FEELguide favorites (yes, he is one of my Future Husbands), having secured that place with his stunning gift of being able to create music that comes embedded with a key to my heart and soul.  1) Yes, he’s gorgeous; 2) yes, he comes with a background in philosophy; and 3) yes, he’s gorgeous — but beyond this — John is one of those rare individuals whose music makes me sit back and take notice.  Yesterday FADER posted a feature on John’s brand new single “Mental Breakdown” which he composed back in 2004 and is just letting us hear this week.  As FADER notes, “it’s a somewhat older song from the hazy pre-’We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves’ days, when Maus had fans, but was much more a cult figure.”   FADER learned of the release thanks to James Brooks (of Elite Gymnastics) who has an entry containing excerpts from an interview John Maus gave, where he said the one thing he is trying to communicate to the world is “I exist.”  They elaborate on a paragraph where John explains just how loaded the phrase “I exist” actually is: “How you can use it to communicate so much to the people you love.  How it’s a much more concise and clear thing to put out into the world than a convoluted, overly specific story about why you’re mad about something.”  Take a listen to John’s 2004 track “Mental Breakdown” below, and for all things John Maus be sure to visit MAUSspace.comRibbonMusic.com, and UpsetTheRhythm.co.uk.  I also strongly advise you to follow John Maus on Facebook.  To learn more about John you can also visit my archive at John Maus on FEELguide, and check out my previous FEELguide profile entitled “FEELguide’s #1 Song Of 2011: John Maus’s “Believer’”.

An Intimate Montreal Night With Bach’s Six Cello Suites And Renowned Cello Soloist Colin Carr

Right now, running from May 10 until June 2, is Montreal’s renowned annual Chamber Music Festival, and last night (thanks to my friend Jody) I had the great fortune of attending the second night of Bach’s Cello Suites performed by Colin Carr, the brilliant cello soloist (who also happens to be a professor at the Royal Academy of Music).  There are 6 suites in Bach’s Cello Suites, and the previous night Carr perfromed #2, #4, and #6; and last night he performed #2, #4, and #6.  The performance took place smack dab in the middle of Montreal’s downtown core at the Saint George Anglican Church, and it was a truly magical experience.  No. 2 and no. 4 were amazing, but when the sixth and final suite opened up I found myself one breath away from levitating straight out of my seat.

Bach’s Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello are some of the most frequently performed and recognizable solo compositions ever written for cello.  According to experts, the suites were most likely composed during the period 1717–1723, when Bach was living in Cöthen, Germany (NOTE: I learned from the hosts that Bach composed these 6 suites upon returning home from a one-month music retreat with his friends only to learn that his wife had passed away while he was away).  The suites contain a great variety of technical devices, an astonishing emotional range, and some of Bach’s most compelling voice interactions and conversations. It is their intimacy, however, that has made the suites amongst Bach’s most popular works today, resulting in their different recorded interpretations being fiercely defended by their respective advocates.  My favorite of the three I heard, No. 6, was actually composed for an unknown 5-string instrument if you can believe it or not.  No one has quite been able to nail down which instrument this actually was, but many believe the mysery instrument was a five-stringed violoncello piccolo – a smaller cello, roughly the size of a 7/8 normal cello.  Regardless, Colin Carr’s cello performance was like quite simply extraordinary, another of the evening’s highlights was Colin’s candid and revealing commentary before each of the 3 suites he performed where he explained how the performance of the suites has evolved through the centuries.  Each of the six suites is broken up into six movements:

1. Prelude
2. Allemande
3. Courante
4. Sarabande
5. Galanteries (Minuets for Suites 1 and 2, Bourrées for 3 and 4, Gavottes for 5 and 6)
6. Gigue

Colin explained how long ago, these suites were performed with a much heavier tone — oftentimes performed with a massive organ in a huge cathedral.  He translated this heaviness into his cello with a couple 60-second soundbites of some of the opening bars of each movement, and revealed how he believes this heaviness was not was Bach had intended.  He went on to perform #2, #4, and #6 with the whimsy and airiness he felt Bach would have wanted.  It was breathtaking, and as I said, my favorite was #6.  In Colin’s own words, #6 was Bach’s most “human” of the suites — intended to express the entire spectrum of the most rapturous and beautiful of all human emotions.  Needless to say, it gave me the chills, and although Colin’s performance of Bach’s Cello Suites cannot be found online, I have collected my six next-best performances of each of #6′s six movements, and I have attached them in the following YouTube playlist.

Get Lost In MS MR’s “Hurricane” Of Images With Their Brand New Tumblricious Video

MS MR is the New York-based glitch pop duo behind “Hurricane”, their brand new track which you can download for free via MSMRsounds.com.  There’s really nothing more I can write about these guys because they’ve done a brilliant job at maintaining as little information about them online as possible — besides links to their sites.  Perhaps they’re terribly shy, and too reclusive to promote their upcoming North American tour beginning June 1st in Brooklyn and wrapping up August 18th in New York (for all the tour dates CLICK HERE).  In a recent interview with Pitchfork, MS MR’s female half discussed the inspiration for “Hurricane”: “‘Welcome to the inner workings of my mind,’ [she] offers with a touch of hostility. Lyrically, ‘Hurricane’ feels beset by a sense of hopelessness, but sounds as though it should soundtrack a heroine turning triumphantly on a heel as the credits roll.”  For all things MS MR be sure to visit MSMRsounds.com, and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.

The WOW Files: Watch Atwood, Amis & Doctorow On America and Its Role In Global Political Culture

New York City recently played host to the PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature, and one of the most fascinating highlights of the event was a talk moderated by A.O. Scott on Wednesday May 2, 2012 which gathered three of the world’s most celebrated authors: Martin Amis (The Pregnant Widow and the upcoming Lionel Asbo: The State of England), Margaret Atwood (The Blind Assassin, The Year of the Flood) and E.L. Doctorow (Ragtime, Homer & Langley). The topic of discussion was entitled “America and its Role in Global Political Culture”, and a few days prior The New York Times had published each author’s essay written exclusively for the Times.  Doctorow’s was called, Unexceptionalism: A Primer“; Atwood’s was titled, “Hello, Martians. Let Moby Dick Explain“; and Amis’s, “Marty and Nick Jr. Go to America.”  The discussion was filmed and you can watch the entire brilliant exchange in the video below.  One of the most insightful conversations on the nature and influence of American politics that you will ever see.

Mindblowing Digital Waterfall In Osaka Acts As Both A Clock And An Infinite Flowing Art Display

This is pretty incredible.  Using the same concept as an LED screen that uses blinking lights to roll words and images across from one side of the screen to the other, this water feature in the Osaka Station City shopping mall in Japan has taken things to a much, much higher level.  The shower heads above are linked up to a computer which prints out not only the time of the day every few minutes, but also a mesmerizing stream of graphic patterns.  Apart from the clock feature, my favorite has to be the scalloped bars that begin in the first video at the 3:37 mark.  The waterfall was created by Koei Industries, and if my hunch is right — Koei Industry is about to sell a shit load of these things around the world very soon.  Amazing work Koei!

Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom” Wows Cannes Critics: A Superb Triumph Of Strangeness & Design

Wes Anderson’s latest film Moonrise Kingdom was the opening presentation at the 65th International Cannes Film Festival earlier today, and from all accounts it was a stunner, capturing the hearts and imaginations of the industry’s top critics lucky enough to be in attendance.  The Playlist’s James Rocchi was there and just published the following review: “‘Moonrise Kingdom,’ like all of Anderson’s films, is a very beautiful and funny movie about grief and sorrow, and the never-was 1965 the film takes place in is both a meticulously-crafted triumph of design and decor and an emotionally rich setting, full of objects you could almost reach out and touch, with feelings and yearnings that reach out to you.”

The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw hails the film as a “heartfelt soufflé of strangeness that rises superbly.”  Earlier this morning he posted this review: “Anderson’s movies are vulnerable to the charge of being supercilious oddities, but there is elegance and formal brilliance in ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ as well as a lot of gentle, winning comedy. His homemade aesthetic is placed at the service of a counter-digital, almost hand-drawn cinema, and he has an extraordinary ability to conjure a complete, distinctive universe, entire of itself.”  And The Hollywood Reporter’s Todd McCarthy praises Moonrise Kingdom as an “impeccably made portrait of young love.”  THR’s review continues, “As in ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’, Anderson is able to express sincere personal connection and compatibility while employing a highly artificial style. The result is that the core of ‘Kingdom’ – the bond between the leads played so forthrightly by newcomers Hayward and Gilman — is strong, even bracing in its resilience.”

You can read all three reviews in full by visiting The Playlist, The Guardian, and The Hollywood Reporter.  Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom opens in North America on May 25th.  If you haven’t yet seen the film’s stunning trailer you can check it out below, and to read a brilliantly written deconstruction of the trailer be sure to read The Playlist’s “What Kind Of Bird Are You? The Beginning Of The End? NBC NEWS Reports Anxious Greeks Withdraw Nearly $1 Billion In One Day

As you read these words, political leaders are gathering in Athens to not only find a way of creating an emergency coalition government out of the country’s fractured political sphere, but also to deal with a possible run on banks.  NBC NEWS is reporting that over the course of Monday’s 24 hours, Greeks withdrew nearly 700 million euros ($900 million) out of fears the country’s economy is not only about to suffer a crash landing, but also a colossal devaluation if it leaves the European single currency and returns to the drachma.  President Karolos Papoulias warned of “great fear that could develop into a panic,” the minutes of Papoulias’ negotiations with political leaders showed, according to Reuters.  The following is an excerpt from the NBC report detailing the transcripted minutes obtained from a meeting between Greek President Karolos Papoulias and George Provopoulos, head of the Greece’s central bank:

“Withdrawals and outflows by 4:00 p.m. when I called him exceeded 600 million euros and reached 700 million euros,” the President said according to the minutes of the meeting. “He expects total outflows of about 800 million euros.”  Several banking sources told Reuters similar amounts had also been withdrawn on Tuesday.

The probability of a Greek exit from the euro (dubbed the “Grexit” by commentators) is now so certain at this point that even political leaders committed to avoid it admit preparations are under way.  Asked in an interview whether Greece could leave the euro zone, IMF director Christine Lagarde replied: “We certainly don’t hope so, from the IMF point of view, but we have to be technically prepared for anything.”  CNBC’s John Carney raised the prospect of reduced limits on ATM withdrawals, citing a calculation by London analysts Capital Economics that if every working-age Greek withdrew the maximum permitted ATM amount of 300 euros a day, every single deposit of Greek households would be gone within 61 days.  “Over the last two years Greeks withdrew approximately 70 billion euros from their bank accounts, an amount equivalent to approximately 35 percent of Greek GDP,” Dr. Michael Arghyrou, senior Economics lecturer at Cardiff Business School in Wales told MSNBC.  You can read the full story by visiting NBC NEWS.

“Ghost Adventures” Crew Member & Wife Contacted By Dead Daughter, Leads To Fascinating Special

I have devoted a major part of FEELguide to my thoughts and beliefs on spirituality, and much of this content deals with the unknowable realm that bridges the living world and the one that greets us when we merge with the infinite.  Although I am not a religious person, I am deeply spiritual and have a strong fascination with the supernatural, especially its mysterious relationship to quantum physics (i.e. the energy which makes up human consciousness cannot be destroyed).  When a human body dies, its consciousness most certainly does not; rather, it shifts to a plane of purely energy-based existence that no human being will ever fully understand or be able to explain.  This is the kind of knowledge that I believe mankind will never fully have access to.

As many of my close friends can confirm, my appreciation for this quantum/spiritual plane manifests in many ways, one of which is my fascination with the study of the paranormal.  Thankfully, there is a great deal of popular culture content available to mainstream audiences in 2012, but my favorite series by far is Ghost Adventures.  The program premiered on premiered on October 17, 2008, and has since become a worldwide phenomenon in its exploration of the unexplained, but on April 20, 2012, the Ghost Adventures crew aired a fascinating special that hit very close to home for the program’s crew.  Normally accustomed to diving head-first into abandoned insane asylums, hospitals, or hotels, the episode entitled “The Galka Family” was very much a first for the GA team.  The team spent a full day with Gary Galka, who also happens to be an equipment designer and developer on the series; and Gary, his wife, and his two daughters opened their doors to Zak, Nick, and Aaron for one of the most revealing and intimate glimpses at how the world that sits across the threshold of our waking life can sometimes make contact with our own.  Gary and his wife lost their daughter Melissa in a tragic car accident, and soon after they began receiving messages and direct communication from Melissa from the other side.

The special that the Ghost Adventures team put together is one of the most honest and personal stories of a family reaching out to the afterlife — and vice versa — that I have ever encountered, and you can watch it in its entirety below.  Truly remarkable.  For all the best FEELguide stories related to spirituality be sure to visit FEELguide Spirituality.  For all things Ghost Adventures be sure to visit their home site on the Travel Channel, as well as follow the show on Facebook and Twitter.
