Buddha, Joan Of Arc & Even Luke Skywalker Shared This #1 Trait That Best Predicts Elite Performance

The Greater Good Science Center (GGSC), based out of the University of California, Berkeley, is unique in its commitment to both science and practice: not only does the organization sponsor groundbreaking scientific research into social and emotional well-being, they also help people apply this research to their personal and professional lives.  Since 2001, the team at GGSC has been at the fore of a new scientific movement to explore the roots of happy and compassionate individuals, strong social bonds, and altruistic behavior — the science of a meaningful life.  And they have been without peer in their award-winning efforts to translate and disseminate this science to the public.

Earlier this morning GGSC published a feature entitled “Failure Makes You A Winner”, which was prefaced with an opening tag that read: “What quality does the Buddha share with Luke Skywalker, Harriet Tubman, and Harry Potter?  The answer is GRIT.”  Christine Carter, Ph.D., is a sociologist and happiness expert who directs the Greater Good Science Center’s parenting program, Greater Good Parents, and in the feature she explores the fundamentals of grit and how you can cultivate grit in yourself and your kids.  The following is an excerpt:

“[It] isn’t just historical or fictional heroes who need to be gritty to rise to the top.  Recent psychological research has found that grit is one of the best predictors of elite performance, whether in the classroom or in the workforce.  Defined by researchers as ‘perseverance and passion for long-term goals,’ grit gives us the strength to cope with a run-of-the-mill bad day (or week or season) as well as with trauma or crisis.  It turns out that grit predicts performance better than IQ or innate talent.  Grit makes us productive and successful because it allows us to reach our long-term goals despite life’s inevitable setbacks.  This ability to overcome challenges makes us stronger and more masterful at our tasks.  Moreover, the ability to cope with difficulty — or to be resilient after tragedy — paves the way for our long-term happiness.  Grit is not really a personality trait as much as it is a facet of a person’s character that is developed like any other skill.  Babies are not born with grit any more than they are born with the ability to speak their mother’s native language.  We humans develop grit by encountering difficulty and learning to cope with it.”

You can read the entire feature by visiting The Greater Good Science Center.  And for more great stories such as this be sure to vist their main home page by CLICKING HERE, and follow GGSC on Facebook, Twitter, and via their Podcast.  You can also learn more about Christine Carter by visiting ChristineCarter.com.

Check Out The Hilarious New Trailer For “The Kings Of Summer” Courtesy Of Funny Or Die

Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts is the man behind the terrific 2010 short Successful Alcoholics, and he’s about to release his very first feature film.  When The Kings Of Summer debuted at Sundance this past January it instantly became the smash hit comedy of the festival, and the brilliant reviews continue to roll in — many of which are pegging this as the “funniest film of the year”.  The film tracks three teenage buddies who, in the ultimate act of independence, decide to spend their summer building a house in the woods and living off the land.  With one look at the brand new Funny Or Die trailer below (Vogt-Roberts directed many shorts for Funny or Die through the years), you will see that much of their angst is due to their overbearing parents, including Megan Mullally (Will & Grace) and Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation).  I’ll be the first in line when The Kings Of Summer hits theatres on May 31st.  I’ve also included the film’s terrific first trailer below, as well as Vogt-Roberts’ 2010 short film Successful Alcoholics.

Banner Photo #128: 60 Minutes Profiles The Amazing Financial & Image Resurrection Of Michael Jackson

It’s almost impossible to believe that almost four years have passed since Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009.  Even to this day his name continues to dominate headlines, one of which is the current court case taking place in Los Angeles where Jackson’s mother is suing for damages over the death of her son from a potent anesthetic.

In a fascinating feature report which aired last night on 60 Minutes, correspondent Lara Logan gets an up close look at how the brand of Michael Jackson has undergone “the most remarkable financial and image resurrection in pop culture history.”  Among those interviewed, Logan sits down with John Branca, an executor of Michael Jackson’s estate: “an architect, if you will — of how to make money off his legacy, most of which will eventually be turned over to Jackson’s three children. Branca was Jackson’s lawyer and advisor off and on for over 25 years and negotiated many of the singer’s biggest deals during his lifetime.”  When asked about the astonishing ability of Michael Jackson to sell more tickets dead than most artists do alive, John Branca replies: “That is absolutely true. Worldwide box office now is over $300 million.  And Michael has almost 60 million Facebook friends.  He’s the biggest selling artist on iTunes and he’s sold approximately 50 million albums since he passed away.”

In his will, Michael Jackson made it explicitly clear that 20% of his estate was to be given to charity, 40% to his children, and 40% went to his mother as long as she was alive, and on her death would go to the children.  Branca tells 60 Minutes: “The whole objective of Michael’s estate plan is to take care of his mother during her lifetime and to accumulate the principle and assests for the benefit of Michael’s children.”

The will named Branca and John McClain, a longtime friend of Michael Jackson, as co-executors — and Jackson’s crippled image was not the only thing they had to contend with when Jackson died.  At first glance, Michael Jackson left more debt than anything.  The day he died, Michael Jackson had about $500 million dollars in debt.  As you will see in the 60 Minutes story below, not only has that $500 million debt been erased in four years, a whopping $100 million has also been raked in, making Michael Jackson the highest earning musician — dead or alive — in the four years since his death.  Adding to this is the fact that Jackson’s crystal clear finances means his estate still owns its 50% stake in a massive music rights package which includes the rights to the Beatles catalogue.  Jackson’s ownership alone is estimated to be worth more than $1 billion.

The WOW Files: ITALIANS DO IT BETTER Release New Album “After Dark 2″ And It’s Ridiculously Amazing

ITALIANS DO IT BETTER just released their highly anticipated follow-up to their 2007 Italo-disco cult classic After Dark, and it’s beyond great.  After Dark 2 was released today and I haven’t even finished listening to the entire album and I’m already in love with it.  The 16-track compilation features new music from CHROMATICS, Glass Candy, Desire, and a host of other Johnny Jewel-related projects.  As Johnny Jewel recently pointed out to DUMMY, “Let’s Kiss” was written the same week as Desire’s “Under Your Spell” in November 2008: “After a bizarre & beautiful twist of fate, I walked into a remote bar in Montreal where I met the love of my life.  The next morning Ida & I had to leave.  We flew to France for a handful of sweaty club shows.  On the train out of Paris, I realized my whole world had been permanently turned upside down.  The rain was crashing against the windows and I decided I wanted to make a record that felt like that moment frozen in time. ‘For Ever Ever’.  That’s when ‘After Dark 2′ was born.”  Johnny Jewel also noted: “The last five years have been a blur of art & parties.  This record represents the people we’ve connected with along the way — in Moscow, in Mexico, in Barcelona, in London, in Portland, in Montreal, in Melbourne, in Houston, in Berlin, in Beijing, in Los Angeles, in Dublin, in Athens.  I am so excited to finally be sharing it with you.”  You seriously need to grab your own copy of After Dark 2 via iTunes, and be sure to follow the ITALIANS DO IT BETTER label on Facebook, their BLOG, and their STORE.  You can also follow producer extraordinaire Johnny Jewel on Soundcloud.

Diane von Fürstenberg Creative Director Transforms 1800s Paris Circus School Into Surreal Loft

Architectural Digest Russia recently profiled this gorgeous Paris loft apartment owned by Yvan Mispelaere, former Creative Director for the Diane von Fürstenberg fashion house.  I try and maintain a good balance of design stories here on FEELguide, but every now and then I come across one in particular that strikes a personal chord where I find myself screaming: “Oh my God, that is sooooo ME!”  And this is one of those spaces.

The detailing and structure of the apartment (located in a Paris side street near the Canal Saint-Martin) are in terrific condition, which is impressive considering it was constructed in the 1800s.  One of the most charming aspects of the apartment’s history that inspired Yvan to make the purchase is that at some point in its history the space was used as a school for the Vozmozhno circus.  Yvan called upon his friend and Paris-based architect Stéphane Ghestem (Stéphane helped discover the space as well) for the redesign, and Stéphane brilliantly managed to incorporate a wide spectrum of Yvan’s interests, from Moroccan living rooms, to the architecture of ancient Greece, to the work of Le Corbusier, and much more.  Stéphane tells AD: “And all of this is reflected in the decor of the apartment.  I wanted to make it look chic and modern, but quite unusual — surreal.”

One look at these photos and I felt as if Stéphane had been reading my own mind, and hats off to Yvan for choosing such a talented designer to take on the project.  Yvan also tells AD“I like modernism, and again, I wanted to have a modern apartment,” he explains.  “But somewhat cool materials associated with the this style, I do not like.  So I chose the man-made stuff, warm and luxurious.  My apartment is a cozy and strange little nest, where I can escape from the bustle of Paris.”  To learn more about the designs of Stéphane Ghestem be sure to visit his site at Abstrakt-Architecture.com.

Vegan Firefighter Is Inspiring America’s Firefighters To Go Vegan With “My Beef With Meat”

Rip Esselstyn is a firefighter in Austin, Texas who had switched to a vegan diet some time ago.  For twelve months his firefighter buddies at Austin’s Engine 2 Firehouse watched Rip consume his daily veggie diet and didn’t think much of it — until one day when their team was hit with some disturbing health news that one of their own was dangerously close to death due to a lifetime diet of sugar, fat, and high cholesterol foods.  In order to rescue their firefighting brother’s health, Rip inspired his team to adopt his own vegan lifestyle.  Not only did the diet stick, it also spread out to the other firehouses of Texas and throughout America because the vegan lifestyle felt so good.  Rip recently paid a visit to CBS This Morning where he sat down to discuss his brand new book My Beef With Meat (Amazon).  You can watch it below, and to learn more about Rip be sure to visit his website at Engine2Diet.com and follow him on Facebook and Twitter.
