Summer has just passed, but before you know it, it’ll be rolling back around again. Planning for your summer trips should always take place in the autumn and winter, so you can give them serious thought. Each of your summer trips needs to be carefully thought through, so they can be as enjoyable as possible.

However, if you haven’t ever planned a trip before (or you haven’t been able to because of COVID restrictions) then this post has got you covered.

Here you will find six useful tips for planning summer trips:

Make a list

When you are planning a trip, one of the first things that you need to do is to make a list of all of the activities that you want to do.  One activity that’s worth considering is taking a tour. According to an agency offering Plitvice Lakes tours from Split, Croatia, booking a tour means that you will be provided with a full travel itinerary, so you don’t have to create one for yourself.  However, you will only be able to take a tour if you are going somewhere that’s culturally or historically significant, or that’s incredibly beautiful like the Plitvice Lakes.

If you are just going to your family’s lake house, it’s unlikely you’ll find a tour company offering anything decent in the local area. Anyway, the point is, make a list of what you want to do, so you have a schedule for when you arrive.

Try new food

When you are going away on a summer vacation, it’s always fun to try new things. Most people’s lives are spent eating foods they are familiar with. Going to new places gives you the opportunity to try new foods and delicacies that you have never heard of before. However, this is only really possible if you are going abroad for your summer vacation. If you are staying in your own country, then it is unlikely that you are going to be able to find anything that is new.

It needs to be said though, if you have any allergies then don’t attempt to be too adventurous with the food that you eat. Also, take some time to learn about the cuisine in the place where you are going on vacation. If it is a country that predominantly eats seafood and you are allergic to fish or shellfish, then you need to be cautious.  It is very common for people to unintentionally eat food that they are allergic to in foreign countries because they don’t speak the language. Try to learn a little bit of the local language so that you can read menus.

Be prepared

Going back to making a list, make sure that you carefully think through each activity that you want to do, so you can prepare. If you have planned to go kayaking on your summer holiday, then make sure that you know where you can get kayaks from. If you don’t prepare then you won’t be able to carry out the activities that you have planned. Preparation is absolutely essential. In addition to preparing equipment, you also need to prepare mentally. If you are going to be doing something that makes you nervous (like bungee jumping or rock climbing) then mental preparation is necessary.

Turning up for one’s vacation unprepared can be disastrous. It can lead to you wasting your time and money, which can lead to your vacation being a costly mistake.  Know exactly what you are doing before boarding your flight or even packing your bags.

Plan ahead

In addition to preparing, you also need to make sure that you plan ahead: How are you going to get to the activities and places that you want to do and see? If you are going to a foreign country, then make sure that you book your flights long in advance of your trip. The more time between your booking and your flights, the more money you will save. When you arrive, how will you get around? The best way to get around in a foreign country is to rent a car because then you can travel according to your own schedule.

If you are not very good at planning, then you can hire a travel agent. A travel agent will be able to arrange your trip for you so that you don’t have to. However, it should be noted that travel agents can be very expensive to work with, making them a bad choice for people who’re on budgets. If you plan on employing one, then make sure that you take some time to do your research, and find one that’s qualified, well-reviewed, and experienced.  Travel agents can also get you places in resorts.

Booking accommodation

When you arrive wherever it is that you’re taking your summer vacation, where are you going to sleep? You can save a lot of money by booking your accommodation a few months in advance of your trip. Since it is only autumn now, if you make a reservation in a hotel or Airbnb for the summer, you can save yourself a lot of money. Making reservations early will help you to avoid late booking premiums. Also, making early reservations also allows you to ensure that you have a place in the hotel that you want to stay in. You won’t have to worry about it being overbooked, and you being turned away.

Inviting friends

Finally, who do you want to go away with? If you ask your friends now, then they might be able to rearrange their plans for the summer and come with you. Since summer’s over seven months away, they probably won’t even have any plans. Asking them now gives them time to prepare. You may also want to consider inviting your family if your friends can’t come. Bringing people you love and care about with you can make your trip a lot more special.

Preparing and planning for your summer trips will help to make them more enjoyable. Not planning can lead to them being chaotic, disorganized, and all over the place. There’s nothing fun about a chaotic vacation. Planning is crucial to avoiding chaos.

I've been writing since 2008 about a wide range of topics. I also love making furniture in my spare time, and birdwatching with my wife near our home in southern England.
