Giving birth can be a delightful moment for expectant mothers. Although, at the same time, giving birth is also a stressful time as there can be numerous natural complications. Unfortunately, suppose all the safety precautions, regulations, and guidelines that have been set to make birth as safe as possible have not been met. In that case, the birthing experience can be a traumatic event. Medical negligence can result in severe injuries, and in worse cases, the outcome can be fatal for the mother and child. With that said, birth injuries can happen unexpectedly, even in a well-established medical facility.

Broken Bones And Head Injuries

A newborn baby is extremely fragile, and any bump or tight squeeze could damage your baby’s bones. When giving birth, the doctor may squeeze the baby’s head with forceps causing bruising and even bleeding on the brain. During difficult labor, the infant’s bones can break. One of the most common is the clavicle, and if your doctor is not gentle, severe bone damage can be the result of this negligence. Trained medical practitioners should know how to handle a fragile infant to prevent any harm that could lead to life-long struggles for the child. It is estimated to be between 600 to 1600 cases of babies being dropped during birth by medical practitioners. In many cases, a drop can be fatal for a newborn.

Nerve Damage

Spinal injuries can occur from incorrect handling of the baby by pulling or twisting in a rough movement. This negligence can cause the baby to have permanent spinal issues if the nerves are badly damaged. Peripheral nerve damage refers to damaged nerves that can hinder proper arm function for the infant. This can go away with time, but if nerves have been badly damaged, it could be permanent.

Lack Of Oxygen To The Brain

A lack of oxygen to the infants’ brain is known as perinatal asphyxia; this birth injury can leave your baby with permanent brain damage. And during birth can cause seizures and, in some cases, death. If the umbilical cord is not correctly handled during the birthing process and the mother’s blood pressure drops, the results can be fatal for both the mother and the baby.

Postpartum Hemorrhage

Also known as PPH, the bleeding caused by childbirth becomes excessive and can be fatal. It is natural to bleed during delivery, but with all the tools and equipment involved, injuries and cuts can occur, which can cause abnormal blood loss for the mother and, in some cases, death. Trained medical practitioners know how to stop the bleeding, although, in medical malpractice cases, the mother could die as a result. Medical lawyers will need to assist and bring the doctors to justice as this is an easily avoidable mishap.

Giving birth in any medical facility is a risk as natural complications can arise. Although finding a professional doctor is a priority to ensure that your baby has the best birth you can afford. If there is malpractice involved, it can be fatal.

I've been writing since 2008 about a wide range of topics. I also love making furniture in my spare time, and birdwatching with my wife near our home in southern England.
