Romance is often pinned on champagne dinners in luxurious restaurants, but in search of the finer things, we actually forget why we are splashing the cash in the first place. Ditch your cell phone and get creative to impress your beau with a few simple tricks. Taking the time to connect with someone and finding out what they really enjoy is imperative at the beginning of a new relationship. We’re often encouraged to spend our wages as opposed to spending time together. What happens if we get back to basics? Here are a few ideas for dating on the cheap.

Disclaimer: Dating ‘on the cheap’ is a little different to being a ‘cheap date’. Dating on the cheap requires thought, it isn’t a beer and some crisps at a dive bar.  Anyone can throw some money at a horse and carriage and call it’romance’. So put down your wallet and get dating!

A Picnic in the Park

Whilst a picnic in the park relies on good weather, it’s a great way to get together and share an evening without having to dine in at an expensive restaurant. Once you have clearance from the gods, pack your hamper full of delicious treats. Picnics are perfect for a spontaneous date with your Badoo crush, so don’t pass up the opportunity. Grab a picnic blanket and head out for the evening, and when it starts to get a bit chilly, you can snuggle up and watch the sun go down. You can also get a cooler box to help keep your beverages cool and fresh

City Cycling

If you already own a bike, then you’re one step ahead. In many cities there are inexpensive public bikes which make for a fun alternative way to get around. Get lost down streets that you would never usually visit, or take a right turn into a part of the city you’ve never explored before. You will find some hidden gems and make some new memories together. When you get tired, dive into a coffee shop for some inexpensive respite and get on the road again.

Cook a Meal at Home

If you fancy yourself as a bit of a chef, try cooking dinner at home. Often the ingredients from the store will be much cheaper than a restaurant and you can have the satisfaction of surprising your date with your culinary flair. A risotto makes for a great romantic meal. For something extra special, pair a risotto with some lobster and a dry white wine. If you’re feeling fancy, pair it with something bubbly — steer clear of prosecco; due to inclimate weather in the north of Italy, prices for the popular tipple have risen dramatically in recent months. For something more affordable try a dry cava or even an Argentinian wine. When you begin to think with your head and not your purse, you’ll start to find new ways of having fun. If a walk to the coast to watch the sunrise is your kind of romance, embrace it and enjoy the spontaneity of dating. Go forth and date on the cheap!

I've been writing since 2008 about a wide range of topics. I also love making furniture in my spare time, and birdwatching with my wife near our home in southern England.
