Look, sometimes it’s just not possible to actually get away – we get it. When you’re stuck in a rut and you need to be anywhere but home though, it can be a hard reality to swallow. Whether long-distance air travel is simply too expensive, or you’re just unable to take much time from work, that doesn’t mean you need to be confined to the same four walls that you’ve become accustomed to every day. Becoming a tourist in your own city or town is the best way to see the things you’ve always taken for granted; in a way that’s more convenient for you.

Of course, when you can’t leave your city, you might think you’ll be missing out on some of the best things about travel… food. But don’t worry, that needn’t be the case.
Here’s how best to enjoy the world’s best cuisines, right on your doorstep!

No Cooking Allowed!

If you cook every night in the week, a true holiday means giving yourself a little time off from this. You’re not supposed to be lifting a finger, thus giving yourself a true break from the norm. Going out to eat every night is one option, actually getting to try all the different restaurants that your city has to offer. But if you truly want to relax? Why not order in? These days, Deliveroo can even deliver breakfast to you, meaning your hunger pangs are covered at any time of day. Don’t forget to splurge on a hotel… a true staycation doesn’t mean actually staying at home!

Where would you go if you had enough money? Thailand? China? Perhaps Japan? Most of Australia’s biggest cities offer an array of cuisines from around the world on offer; and instead of hopping on a plane to try out their native foods, you can just hop in a cab or walk there from your hotel. If you live somewhere smaller, make sure you do your research. Pick two or three types of cuisine you want to try, and work with what you’ve got. Perhaps you fancy authentic Italian pasta, followed by the freshest sushi? Doing a culinary tour of your city is second best only to the real thing.

Read TripAdvisor’s Restaurant Reviews

You want to eat like a true traveller? Well, when in Rome (in your dreams, anyway), TripAdvisor is like a traveller’s bible these days, telling you exactly which foodie faves are worth your time and your money. Chances are, you haven’t been to half of the restaurants in your area. If it’s been there all along, it’s easy to take it for granted. Well, not this time. Just pick out the best choices, and enjoy.

Don’t Forget… Act Like You’re On Holiday

If you plan on eating and drinking a little more than you usually would, don’t beat yourself up about it. Holidays aren’t for calorie-counting, nor are staycations. Live a little, and eat a LOT. You don’t have to go far or spend lots of money to experience the freedom – and food – that travel brings.

I've been writing since 2008 about a wide range of topics. I also love making furniture in my spare time, and birdwatching with my wife near our home in southern England.
