The Vieuxtemps Guarneri is the world’s oldest and most renowned violin.  Built by Giuseppe Guarneri around 1741, the violin is also the most expensive, with an estimated price tag of well beyond $15 million.  The Vieuxtemps Guarneri violin is in pristine condition, with no cracking or patchwork, and the fact that the violin has a meticulously recorded provenance adds to its value even more.  In 2013, it was announced that Anne Akiko Meyers was selected to receive lifetime use of the Vieuxtemps Guarneri.  Born in San Diego in 1970, Anne is one of the world’s most celebrated violinists, and earlier this summer WGBH invited her to perform with the iconic instrument.  You can watch her performance of Bach’s famous Air on a G String, from Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major, BWV 1068, together with pianist Anton Nel.  For more great stories from the world of classical music you can visit Classical Music on FEELguide.
