As part of the LILLE3000 Festival, and in conjunction with FANTASTIC 2012, the city of Lille, France will be home to hundreds of events and exhibitions from October 6th – January 13th 2012. One of the most intriguing facets of the festival is entitled Metamorphoses In Public Space, where twenty international artists have created a series of stunning installations at various locations around the city. Dutch artist and architect Daan Roosegaarde is one of the artists getting a huge amount of attention with his piece entitled “Lotus Dome” which is installed inside the Sainte Marie Madeleine Church. What at first appears to be a 7-foot-tall scale model of a 3/4 geodesic dome is in fact a robotic assemblage of thousands of aluminum folded flowers which curl in response to human behavior. As visitors approach the work, the light from within the dome escapes from the opening petals, illuminating the shadowy church to stunning effect.
