Philip Glass is one of the most important composers of the past century, and when someone of this stature turns 75-years-old it’s time for a celebration — and then some. There are several projects in the works that are part of Glass’s 75th birthday in January, but one of the most highly anticipated is the remix album Rework: Philip Glass Remixed produced by Beck which will be released through Orange Mountain Music, Ernest Jenning and the Kora Records on October 23rd. Rolling Stone writes:
Rework: Philip Glass Remixed will be comprised of two CDs featuring Beck, Tyondai Braxton (formerly of Battles), Dan Deacon, Amon Tobin, Memory Tapes, Pantha du Prince and more. Rework is one of many projects that will celebrate Glass’s 75th birthday this January. The composer is set to continue his ongoing Einstein on the Beach tour, his opera The Perfect American (about the final days of Walt Disney) and more. Earlier this morning, Beck’s stunning 20-minute piece entitled “NYC: 78-78” was released which combines 20 Philip Glass songs including “Vanessa and the Changelings” (from the 2002 film The Hours), “My Worst Habit” (from the 1998 chamber opera Monsters of Grace) and the opening song from the Twyla Tharp-choreographed dance work In the Upper Room. In an interview with NPR, Beck spoke about his love letter to Glass: “When listening to pieces from all the different eras of Philip Glass’ work. It felt like there was a continuum — an accretion of harmonic ideas that built over time into a larger, less definable work.” The final result is nothing short of brilliant, and I would easily include it as one of the greatest remix works of the past decade.
