Like any other metropolis in the world, Taipei (the capital of Taiwan) counts every millimeter when creating living space that meets international luxury standards. TBCD (Taipei Base Design Center) has produced some ingenious interiors around the city and below you will find three examples in particular. What struck me most is how taken aback I was when seeing these images for the first time. I come from a background in architecture and have been working as a designer for ten years now, so I trust my instincts and my personal style. Maybe it’s my love of tastefully-designed smaller spaces, but when I saw these photos they completely resonated with me. It’s very rare for me to find a design firm whose work matches this closely to mine. It’s a bit like those moments when you’re trying to tune in a radio station with an old antenna and suddenly BAM it comes in clear. With the airwarves chalk full of tasteless interior design white noise, the work of TBCD is operating on exactly the same frequency as I am.
The first photo gallery showcases the apartment they designed for Mr. Tsai in Taipei. Within the space they have fitted together the living functions like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. Panels and mirrors, ingeniously placed, create in a relatively small floor area, clearly defined spaces that flow together logically. Many designers would no doubt have opted for pale shades, but they went for dark browns and greys to produce highly draamatid effect. In the second photo gallery you will find their design for Ms. Kung’s small home. I love her work station and the elegant play between the living room and kitchen. And in the third photo gallery, TBCD gave the client a beautiful interior for a 2-storey dwelling. The bedroom in particular did it for me.
