Gaming is a popular pastime in the UK, for children and adults alike. Technological advances have led to upgrades in the world of gaming, including the creation of advanced graphics, virtual reality, and even facial recognition software. However, despite the number of Brits clamouring to get hold of the latest games, many are shunning the Xbox in favour of retro games and old school consoles.

If you’re craving a retro gaming experience, there are a number of ways to achieve this. You could shop around for second-hand consoles and pick up old games from eBay. You could even build your very own retro computer specifically for gaming, provided you have the time and patience to do so. Let’s explore some different options for playing retro games in 2021.

Remaster versions

A number of classic console games are now available on modern systems. Fans of Shadow of the Colossus were delighted when it was released on PS4, along with a wide range of other vintage games. You could also invest in a Nintendo Switch, as every major game for the Wii U is available through those.

Nintendo Switch Online Play offers a wide range of classic NES and SNES games, including The Legend of Zelda and various Super Mario games. There are a few different membership options available for Nintendo Switch Online Play. You can also sign up for a 7-day trial before committing to a paid membership.

Second-hand consoles

If you’re after a proper retro game experience, have a look online or stop by your local electronic buy and sell shop. If you’re lucky you could get your hands on a Gameboy, DS, Nintendo 63, Super Nintendo, GameCube or similar. As long as the consoles are still functioning properly you’ll be able to connect them to your TV with a composite video connection. You may also be able to pick up some old school games for a low price too.

Build your own retro PC

If you’re good at DIY and enjoy the technical process of building something from scratch, why not build your own PC for playing games? Older console games can be played on a modern screen if you use an emulator such as LattePanda, Raspberry Pi or Arduino. The LattePanda has proven to be suitable for retro gaming, and its versatile single-board computer makes it the ideal choice for this kind of project.

I've been writing since 2008 about a wide range of topics. I also love making furniture in my spare time, and birdwatching with my wife near our home in southern England.
