January 23, 2019 marked the 30th anniversary of Salvador Dali’s death, and in typical Dali fashion the master surrealist has returned from the grave to refute the rumours of his death. The video was created by The Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida and the team at San Francisco-based creative agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, as part of the “Dali Lives” installation. Beginning in April 2019, visitors to the Dali museum will be guided by Dali himself as he follows them through the exhibit and shares stories about his creative process, his work, and modern day events.

The digital resurrection was made possible by “deep fake” technology which pulls content from millions of frames of filmed footage with high-profile figures, and overlays these images onto 3D models of their heads. “Dali was prophetic in many ways and understood his historical importance,” said Dr. Hank Hine, Executive Director at The Dali in a statement. “He wrote, ‘If someday I may die, though it is unlikely, I hope the people in the cafes will say, ‘Dali has died, but not entirely.’ This technology lets visitors experience his bigger-than-life personality in addition to our unparalleled collection of his works.”
