In good ol’ Norse mythology, the term Ragnarök describes a collection of future events that involve: the deaths of Thor and Loki (among others), an epic battle, a crap load of natural disasters, and a global flood. But for rock and pop lovers in Scandinavia, RAGNAROCK is better known as the brand new contemporary museum and “cultural greenhouse” located in Roskilde, just outside Copenhagen.
Designed by Dutch architects MVRDV and Danish firm COBE, RAGNAROCK is also a youth center, and its new home sits in what used to be an old concrete factory. COBE’s website describes how “the project transforms the area into a district of rock music and youth culture, whilst adding a new building on top of the existing structures – the RAGNAROCK Museum – housing exhibition facilities, auditorium, offices and a bar. With a gold studded facade, velvety red interior and cantilevered auditorium, the building creates an exciting play between old and new, rough and shiny, simple and bold, embodying the essence of rock music.”
And RAGNAROCK’s website adds, “centered around the music, the museum tells the story about the youth culture and the musical eras from the 1950’s and up until today. Through the years, the music has been the speaker of the youth and has created the foundation for various political views, technologies, linguistic trends, media and fashion.” For all the details on what you need to know for your visit check out MuseumRagnarock.dk.
