Sufjan Stevens’ magnus opus, Carrie & Lowell, is hands down the greatest and most important album of 2015 — and quite possibly of this decade. The album is a heart-shattering yet transcendent journey through Sufjan’s life story — from his mother’s abandonment and mental illness, to his childhood roots in Michigan, to his mother’s death in December 2012, and through to his full-circle walk through the fire of grief.
