Sufjan Stevens’ magnus opus, Carrie & Lowell, is hands down the greatest and most important album of 2015 — and quite possibly of this decade. The album is a heart-shattering yet transcendent journey through Sufjan’s life story — from his mother’s abandonment and mental illness, to his childhood roots in Michigan, to his mother’s death in December 2012, and through to his full-circle walk through the fire of grief. Each song is a triumph, but its the power and beauty of “Fourth Of July” that stands above them all. Last month filmmaker Jesse Yules — who has directed videos for Grizzly Bear, Of Montreal, Owen Pallett, and more — made his own video love letter to Sufjan’s masterpiece track, and you can watch the gorgeous results in full above.
