Margaret Atwood is one of the most brilliant public intellectuals of our time, and in her 2008 book Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth she examines the nature of debt from the financial, psychological, theological, literary, and ecological points of view. To promote the book’s release, Atwood delivered each of the five parts in a lecture at a different Canadian city between October 12 and November 1, 2008. In the final part, titled Payback, Atwood examines ecological debt by crafting a modernized version of A Christmas Carol, with Scrooge being visited by three spirits.
