This week director Richard Linklater sat down with Charlie Rose to discuss the making of his magnus opus Boyhood. The film took an astonishing 12 years to make — made possible by trustworthy actors who worked without contracts (Hollywood has a standard 7-year contract which would have made the film impossible to produce), and the creative and financial backing of IFC Films. These are just two of the many complications involved in pulling off such an impressive work of art, and the final product has many — including myself — championing Boyhood as the greatest film of 2014. Just this week The New York Film Critics, as well as EMPIRE magazine have ranked Boyhood as the #1 film of the year.
