The Sistine Chapel (first opened on August 15, 1483, and painted by Michelangelo between 1508-1512) is one of the crown jewels of western civilization, and experts have been working for decades to protect Michelangelo‘s masterpiece from the elements of light, moisture, soundwaves, and more. Recently, the Chapel unveiled its biggest technological upgrade in more than more than 500 years. A brand new state of the art LED lighting system is shedding new (and safer) light on the beloved walls and ceiling, but as CBS This Morning reports, it’s the revolutionary new air conditioning system that’s got everyone buzzing. CBS News’ Allen Pizzey got an up-close look at the renovation, and spoke one-on-one with the engineer whose Connecticut company won the contract for the high-tech ventilation system which is run by cameras and software which scans and counts each and every person who enters the space, adjusting the temperature and air exchange accordingly.
