Until the Great Depression, America was the world’s leading manufacturer of maple syrup.  Fast forward to 2014 and Canada has become the #1 supplier.  The change has nothing to do with industry competitiveness, and everything to do with how Mother Nature is moving the industry north due to climate change.  CBS This Morning‘s Michelle Miller recently paid a visit to one New Hampshire family with a long history of making maple syrup.  She examines how the entire U.S. maple syrup industry is at risk of disappearing, along with a centuries-old way of life.  Miller also profiles author Douglas Whynott’s new book, The Sugar Season, where Whynott writes about his year spent with one New England family as they work to preserve the ancient, lucrative, and threatened agricultural art of maple syrup production.  You can purchase your own copy on Amazon.
