The past twenty years has seen the rise of email, which means it has also seen the rise of headaches associated with the convenient technology.  One of my biggest pet peeves about email is when people don’t reply.  After all, what is so hard about answering a simple email?  My other biggest pet peeve is when people reply too often — getting stuck in a never-ending “Reply All” email thread can send your phone beeping with new mail alerts for days and days.  Thankfully there’s a way to silently remove yourself from these threads without being rude and writing everyone with the very impolite words “Please remove me from this thread!”

When you open the email thread you would like to leave, look up on the top bar and click on the “More” tab.  Once inside, look down at the bottom and click on the “Mute” button.  And that’s it!  Once you click mute, all those unnecessary multiple replies will be archived and will not appear in your Inbox.  From then on you will only receive emails from the thread that are emailed to you and nobody else, or the ones where you are included in the “To” or “Cc” line.

If you need to get inside the thread later to find something, simply type the words “is:muted” in your Gmail search bar and all those emails will be there.  And should you wish to reactivate the thread you can click “More” then “Unmute” to have the emails appear in your Inbox again.
