Chris Hedges is the renowned Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of several books including War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning (2002) which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction, Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle (2009), Death of the Liberal Class (2010) and his most recent New York Times best seller, written with the cartoonist Joe Sacco, Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt (2012).

In a recent radio conversation, Hedges discusses the impending global collapse that is approaching all too fast.  As the cracks of the next Great Depression become more and more visible, Hedges argues that we now live in two societies: 1) the minority which functions in a print-based, literate world, that can cope with complexity and can separate illusion from truth; and 2) the growing majority which is retreating from a reality-based world into one of false certainty and magic.  In this “other society,” the movements (such as Occupy, Greenpeace, etc.) that are essential to keeping corporations and speculators from hijacking the halls of power and destroying civilization as we know it, are being overlooked and pushed aside.

Movements are the most fundamentally important component of a healthy civilization that is capable of keeping power in check.  In his interview above, Hedges explains in exquisite detail how globalization and unfettered capitalism are quickly bringing our world to the brink of collapse, unlocking an age of terrifying decline and heightened self-delusion.

The interview, which you can watch in full above, is one of the most important and fascinating discussions I have ever known, and I urge you to watch it in its entirety.  You can read all of Chris Hedges’ brilliant writings by visiting TruthDig.com.
