On Thursday, March 6th, the Dalai Lama will give the opening prayer inside the United States Senate for the first time in history.  The Tibetan spiritual leader will be stepping in for Senate Chaplain Barry Black.  Black has often invited various religious leaders to step in for the opening prayer in the past, but this is the first time the Dalai Lama will be conducting the official prayer.  China will most certainly be unimpressed.  President Obama and the Dalai Lama met two weeks ago in the Map Room for their third visit of Obama’s two terms in the White House (the previous was in July 2011).  China responded with a swift and stern demand for Obama to cancel the meeting.  The meeting went ahead as scheduled.
