This weekend Lee Cowan of CBS Sunday Morning profiled ten buddies who have maintained their close friendship in the most unique way — by continuing the world’s most epic game of tag. Now in their middle-age years and living in various cities and towns spread out across America, these guys are continuing a tradition that goes back all the way to their younger years in high school. It is one of the most heartwarming stories I have come across in quite some time, and to be perfectly honest it caught me off guard half way through watching it when I began to get a bit misty-eyed. This weekend I went to a good friend’s wedding and got to see quite a few of my old friends from university. We all went our separate ways thirteen years ago, yet whenever we all get together it’s as if the big gaps in time in between our reunions magically disappear. Perhaps Christopher Hitchens said it best when he wrote: “A melancholy lesson of advancing years is the realization that you can’t make old friends.” Well said, Christopher. I plan on keeping my old friends for as long as I live.
