Late last Friday the U.S. Supreme Court announced it is going to weigh in on one of the most talked about and emotional issues in America — whether gay couples have the same rights as everybody else, specifically with regards to marriage.  In two separate cases from opposite ends of the country, SCOTUS will take on the issue of gay marriage for the very first time.

The Court agreed to look at Prop 8 which passed four years ago in California effectively banning same-sex marriage by deeming it unconstitutional.  Now that SCOTUS is taking on the issue it will make a decision as to whether or not states are allowed to ban gay marriage.  And in the second case, SCOTUS will take on the challenge to the Federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) which defines marriage as only legal if it is a union between a man and a woman.  The woman at the center of The United States vs. Windsor is Edie Windsor of New York, who married her longtime partner in 2007. When her wife passed away she was left her estate and later received a tax bill for $336,000 because the government didn’t recognize the legality of her marriage.  You can watch this remarkable woman’s story in the NBC NEWS profile below.

Earlier this morning the roundtable of ABC NEWS’ This Week With George Stephanopoulos had a brilliant conversation about the issue and you can watch it in full below.  At the end of the day if you boiled down the issue of gay marriage in the United States the objection to it would be reduced to one thing — religion.  It’s not the more enlightened branches of Christianity such as Unitarian, Episcopalian, and North American Anglican that have a problem with gay marriage — it’s the Catholics and Evangelicals who are blocking it.  In the New Testament Jesus himself beautifully said “God is love.” Any Catholic or Evangelical who refuses to embrace gay marriage is not only a failed Christian, they have yet to understand what true love is to begin with.  In the ABC NEWS roundtable it’s amazing to watch some of the most intelligent minds in American politics speak so beautifully about such an important issue.

As a Canadian it’s exciting to see America make such huge strides towards marriage equality in recent years, and I’m cautiously optimistic that the justices of the U.S. Supreme Court will use their souls on this one.  As Jesus himself said, “God is love.”  Hopefully by this summer America’s highest court will make it clear that “One nation under under God” is also “One nation under Love.”
