Last night The Playlist posted a story on the very first trailer for director Roman Coppola‘s new film A Glimpse Inside The Mind of Charles Swan III in which they reminded me that it’s been ten years since Coppola released his previous film CQ. My heart stopped for a brief moment, I pulled up my calendar, and then I realized it was indeed true — ten years has passed and I remember CQ like it was yesterday. “What have I done with my life? Did I make this decade count? What is the meaning of it all anyway?” These are the kinds of questions that surface in stop-and-check moments like this.
These are also the same kinds of questions that emerge when we get dumped as well. Big moments beget big contemplations. A Glimpse Inside The Mind of Charles Swan III tells the story of the eponymous graphic designer (Charlie Sheen) whose girlfriend dumps his ass, leaving him in a state of self reflection, and from the two-minute trailer it’s certainly not lacking in style or talent. Set in a fantastical 1970s California the film also stars Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman, and for a brief second I caught myself daydreaming that it was some sort of Gonzo-esque sequel to Moonrise Kingdom set ten years in the future (Coppola co-wrote Moonrise Kindgom with Wes Anderson).
Apart from the interesting Fear And Loathing In Moonrise Kingdom vibe going on here, seeing Charlie Sheen share the screen with Murray and Schwartzman is amazing to watch. I’ll be the first in line when A Glimpse Inside The Mind of Charles Swan III arrives in theatres on February 8th.
