Our planet is surrounded by rings of plasma which are part of its giant magnetosphere, and those plasma rings are bursting with radio waves. The rings produce a sound nicknamed Earth’s “chorus” which, although not audible to the human ear, has been captured every now and then by ham-radio operators here on Earth for years now. But recently NASA launched their Radiation Belt Storm Probes which included the Electric and Magnetic Field Instrument Suite and Integrated Science (EMFISIS) and the instrument finally captured the sound of Earth’s chorus in crystal clear quality. The reason the sound has been called Earth’s “chorus” for so many decades now is due to its striking resemblence to a chorus of birds chirping away in the morning sunrise — a sound which is now captured in perfect quality.
