To say I Am Love was my favorite film of 2010 would be similar to pointing out that the Sun is the brightest object in the sky. I worshiped this film, and with it director Luca Guadagnino opened a door to a very bright future as one of Hollywood’s rising new filmmakers. Guadagnino is a master at embedding visual poetry and exquisite atmosphere into the moving image, so I’ve been anxiously awaiting to see what he would choose as his next project. Recently it was announced that Guadagnino is set to bring James Ellroy‘s The Big Nowhere to the big screen. The novel is Ellroy’s precedent to L.A. Confidential, and the two join The Black Dahlia and White Jazz to form Ellroy’s “L.A. Quartet” of books, as they’ve come to be known. The Playlist writes:
Set in Los Angeles in 1950, against the backdrop of the famous Zoot Suit Riots, the plot follows Deputy Danny Upshaw as he tries to track down a serial sex murderer while also being forced against his will to expose Hollywood communists. Along the way, he also crosses paths with characters like ex-cop Buzz Meeks (a minor character in ‘L.A. Confidential’), LAPD lieutenant Mal Considine, and Ellroy’s greatest creation, monstrous police chief Dudley Smith.
