The undisputed King Of All 2011 Movie Soundtracks would have to be the that belonging to Nicolas Winding Refn’s smash hit Drive. Apart from the “alright, but not amazing” score by Cliff Martinez, the real emotional punches came courtesy of master producer Johnny Jewel — the man behind GLASS CANDY, as well as spin-off bands CHROMATICS (“Tick Of The Clock“) and Desire (“Under Your Spell“). In a huge surprise to his fans, late last night Johnny released a massive 2.5 hour, 36-track soundtrack entitled Symmetry: Themes For An Imaginary Film. All 150 minutes of Symmetry are steeped in lick synths and 80s electronic haze, and add up to one seriously impressive offering. Johnny started recording this all the way back in May 2008 — more than two years before Johnny even met Refn or heard of the film Drive. Described as “a conceptual tangent between GLASS CANDY, CHROMATICS, Mirage, & Desire’s more abstract sides” the project openly states its influences ranging from John Cage, Glenn Branca, Maurice Ravel, Gyorgy Ligeti, Erik Satie, Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Carpenter, Wendy Carlos and more.
