In 2007’s Michael Clayton, writer and director Tony Gilroy, takes an unflinching look at the lengths that some corporations will go to to maintain a cloak of secrecy surrounding their nefarious goings-on. It tells the story of Michael Clayton (played by George Clooney), an attorney with a gambling problem, who is trying to cope with a colleague’s apparent mental breakdown, and the corruption and intrigue surrounding a major client of his law firm being sued in a class action case over the effects of toxic agrochemicals. Tilda Swinton portrays the character of U-North’s sinister general counsel, Karen Crowder, and it was her incredible, nerve-racking performance that won her the Best Supporting Actress trophy at the 80th Annual Academy Awards on February 24, 2008.
