Ghostly International just posted this fascinating animated GIF of a pie chart that breaks down the year-by-year revenue stream of the American music industry from 1980-2010.  The infographic is based on data collected by the Recording Industry Association Of America.  It’s interesting to watch the rise of the CD in 1983 going from being a fringe technology to its peak in 2005.  And the cassette tape’s more than 50% market share in 1989 to its extinction 14 years later, as well as the explosion of digital technology in 2005.  For a gallery of each year’s specific pie chart be sure to visit RitzHoltz.com.
