Keiichi Matsuda‘s latest mindblowing creation comes in the form of a music video for the Japanese group bossarica‘s track “Neon Sign”. Keiichi’s craft as both a theoretician and a filmmaker caught the world’s attention last August with his conceptual 3D video featuring the augmented reality of a man not too far off in the future as he shows no need of clumsy smart phones or computers — all he needs is the air space around him to make a phone call or pull up his information (NOTE: the video is even more interesting if you have a pair of 3D glasses kicking around). With his new video for boassarica, Keiichi takes a drab concrete Tokyo and injects a neon life into it that is absolutely spellbinding to watch. I couldn’t take my eyes off it, and once again we’ve been shown the beautiful possibilites of lightmapping projection. The lightmapping used in the Tokyo parking garage location is combined with 2D and 3D compositing to frame lead singer Okika with pulsating blast of light rings as she sprouts neon seeds, roots, and eventually a gigantic neon tree with branches reaching out over all of Tokyo.
