Let it be known that as of 9:07am EST on May 14, 2011, I have officially coined the term “Immersive Interactive Technology”.  If it takes off, you can direct all royalties and credits to Brent Lambert, Editor of FEELguide.com.  If it doesn’t take off, then it was worth a shot.  The godfather of this new “IIT” is none other than Chris Milk, the man who shot to fame with (among other things) Arcade Fire’s brilliant video for “We Used To WaitThe Wilderness Downtown” which allows the viewer to use web browser technology and Google Maps to put themselves, and the street on which they live, directly into the video and become one with the greatest rock band of the past decade. At the recent Coachella Music Festival in California, Arcade Fire teamed up with Chris for a live, interactive set in order to portray the emotional landscape of the band’s performance.  The Creators Project has this description:

During Arcade Fire’s last song “Wake Up,” cascades of beachballs were released into the crowd. With the help of ESKI and Moment Factory, Milk was able to control the LEDs and IR transmitters, embedded in each ball, to light paint kaleidoscopic patterns all over the unsuspecting audience. Their interactive visual performance, entitled Summer Into Dust continues online. Those lucky few who managed to catch one of the LED beachballs can log on to the accompanying website where we’ll frequently be posting info on new ways to keep updating your ball. There’s really no great Vimeo or YouTube video available to showcase the brilliance of the ball drop and the technology inside of them (they change color according to the sound) so to see the trailer for the collaboration be sure to visit The Creators Project. 3 Dreams of Black” is a new interactive film directed by Chris Milk for the song “Black” by ROME, a music project by Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi featuring Jack White & Norah Jones. The project is a Chrome Experiment that showcases some of the latest web technologies like WebGL in modern browsers like Google Chrome. Not only can you interact with video, you can also add your own items to the dream or see what others have build. For those of you who want to know the technical details: this page will keep you busy for a while. The model view and the demos are just as impressive.
