Lately I’m only slightly obsessed with Trent Reznor’s and Atticus Ross’s score for “The Social Network”.  Most of the score is simply background puff, but there are moments of real genius in there.  For instance, when Trent and Atticus needed to craft a sound to go with Mark Zuckerberg’s character, a cold and heartless code-writing maniac, mixed with the faint glimpse of a beating heart deep inside, they used the “found sound” of a buzzing air conditioner mixed with the warm and fuzzy beautiful piano chord they created.  Watch and listen as the guys open the door to their studio (the same studio that gave birth to all of Nine Inch Nails’ music) and show The New York Times all (well, some) of their secrets:

And perhaps my favorite song from the movie is “Hand Covers Bruise” which incorporates the air conditioning and piano:
