Yves Saint Laurent has just released their Spring/Summer 2011 ad campaign and the designs are fucking fantastic. Occasionally I will see a dress that makes me wish I was a woman and the white one below did just that. Fashion has always impressed me with its ability to find new ways of enhancing both human form and beauty. Coming from a background in architecture I have always been fascinated by the connection between these two arts and this white dress garnered the same reaction from me as I sometimes get when I see a beautifully-designed building. Good fashion design (like architecture) juggles several things seemingly effortlessly: its response to an existing structure or site (i.e. the body, city, or existing structure), consideration of function and form, and the poetic. Dear YSL: please translate this white dress into the men’s version and deliver it to me with a big bow, please?
The campaign itself was shot in the gardens of the 1930s Villa Bled Roknine in Marrakech’s Palmeraie in Morocco where Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé bought the amazing Jardin Majorelle back in 1980.
