Hotel was a prime-time drama series which aired on ABC from September 1983 to May 1988 in the timeslot following Dynasty. Based on Arthur Hailey’s 1965 novel of the same name (which had also inspired a 1967 feature film), the series was produced by Aaron Spelling and set in the elegant and fictitious St. Gregory Hotel in San Francisco (the Fairmont San Francisco).  Episodes followed both the activities of passing guests as well as the personal and professional lives of the permanent hotel staff.

My friend Francoise is boarding her jet plane at 5am tomorrow morning for her week-long vacation and she just told me that this is where she will be staying.  I lived in San Francisco for the first half of 2001 and I can remember always wanting to spend a night there but never managed to get around to it.  Someday, San Francisco, I’ll be back and I’ll stay at the Fairmont too …

And if you haven’t seen it, here’s Simon Christen’s gorgeous love letter to San Francisco, called “The Unseen Sea”.
