One of my biggest passions is trying to understand the complexities of the human brain and conciousness.  How is it that an 8lb lump of fat and water can have conciousness?  It is the holy grail of neuroscience and lately it seems we’re getting an itsy-bitsy tiny bit closer to the answer (although I am convinced we will never truly know how this happens, and I think we’re much better off not knowing).  Scientific American has a brilliant new article about the latest research in this field.  You MUST read this: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=neuroscience-of-selfhood
