Each time a sperm cell reaches an egg cell and conception is triggered, a brilliant microscopic “flash” illuminates around the point of contact. And for the very first time this flash has been witnessed in human cells. This flash is, in fact, triggered by zinc — and the brilliance and brightness of the flash could be an indication of the strength of the fertilization. This flash has been seen before in mice, but this is the first human sperm flash ever recorded. (Source: Slate; image credit: Sebastian Kaulitzki via Getty Images)
