Our world’s collection of living creatures is the gift that keeps on giving.  While participating in an intense international expedition of field biologists, Trond Larsen happened to catch a glimpse of a tiny insect roughly 5mm in length (approx 1/5 of an inch) and he snapped the photo above.  The amazing little bug has a spectacular tuft of hair protruding out of its back end, which scientists say is, “a waxy secretion many planthoppers excrete from their abdomen, which may protect the bugs against predators and parasites.”  The insect was discovered in the rainforests of Suriname, a country on the northeastern Atlantic coast of South America.
