There are some items of everyday fashion that seem as if they’ve been around since the dawn of time — underwear, socks, and of course T-shirts are some of the first to come to mind. So I was slightly taken aback when I learned that the T-shirt is, in fact, only 100 years old. Created by the U.S. navy, the design stipulated for a shirt which was made of the thinnest yet most durable cotton available, with a sleeve length that came to just below the armpit. This past weekend CBS This Morning paid tribute to the fashion icon, and took us on a journey from the T-shirt’s humble beginnings at the turn of the 20th century, all the way to 2013 where there is one T-shirt for sale at the Hermes boutique on Madison Avenue in New York City with a whopping price tag of $91,500. Happy Birthday to the big T!
