Fashion designer John Galliano gave first and only television interview to Charlie Rose, two years and three months since his 2010 hate speech incident at a Parisian bar which was captured on video by strangers seated at a table beside him.
The viciously anti-semitic rant destroyed his career, and in a matter of hours Galliano went from the soaring heights of the fashion world straight down to the darkest valleys of the human soul. The video — which remains as painful to watch as it was the first day it was released nearly three years ago — marked the beginning of a new life for Galliano. At that point he was a “blackout alcoholic”, and often found himself waking up in unknown locations, and in his own words, spent his waking days filled with an insufferable sense of fear. Galliano’s conversation with Charlie Rose is an eye-opening hour, and for the entire duration I found myself glued to every word from Galliano’s mouth and every nuance in his face (which also happens to be a much different looking face than the one he had in 2010, by the way).
Say what you will about Galliano, this is one of the most compelling interviews I have seen in quite some time, and provides a remarkable insight into the nature of addiction, creativity, ego, fame, friendship, forgiveness, and self discovery.
